Life in a simple nest
Chapter I
শান্তিনিকেতনে পিয়ারসান পল্লি বলে একটি গ্রাম আছে, এখানে এসে আমার পরিচয় ঘটে কিছু সাঁওতাল পরিবার ও সেখানকার ছেলে-মেয়েদের সাথে। তাদের সাথে আমার বেশ কিছু সময় কেটেছে। জেনেছি তাদের সুখ-দুখের কথা, তাদেরকে বলেছি আমার কথা। সেখানকার বাচ্চাদের সাথে খেলেছি, তাদের পড়িয়েছ। আমি যেমন তাদের শিখিয়েছি, তেমন শিখেওছি তাদের থেকে। এই দেনা-পাওনার মধ্যেই আমার জীবনের অনেকটা সময় কেটে গেছে। এইসব জায়গাই আমাকে ছবি আঁকতে অনুপ্রেরণা জুগিয়েছে। এই সিরিজে আমি সাঁওতাল ছেলে-মেয়েদের নিয়ে কাজ করেছি। ওদের খেলাধুলোর মধ্যে যে প্রাঞ্জল ভাব রয়েছে সেটা আমাকে বরাবরই আকর্ষণ করে, আর সেটাই আমি তুলে ধরার চেষ্টা করেছি।
ট্রান্সফরমেশন নিয়ে কিছু কাজ আমি করেছিলাম। সেখানে আমি মানুষের আভ্যন্তরীণ পরিবর্তন কতটা হয় সেটাই বোঝার ও বোঝানোর চেষ্টা করেছি। সাথে নিজের সাথেও কিছু মিল আমি তুলে ধরেছি। শুধুমাত্র পরিবেশগত নয়, পরিবেশের সাথে সাথে নিজের মানসিক পরিবর্তন কিভাবে হচ্ছে সেটাও ছবিতে ফুটে উঠেছে।
এই গ্রামীণ পরিবেশই আমাকে অনেক বেশি অনুপ্রাণিত করেছে। যেমন শান্তিনিকেতন,এখানে গ্রামীণ পরিবেশ ও মানুষ মিলে-মিশে একাকার হয়ে যাচ্ছে। প্রকৃতির সাথে মানুষের যে সংযোগ, সেটা আমি আরও অনেক কাছ থেকে দেখতে পেয়েছি, গভীরভাবে পর্যবেক্ষণ করতে পেরেছি। আর এসব থেকেই আমার এই কাজগুলো করা।

There is a village called “Pearsonpally” in Shantiniketan. When I came here, I met some Santal family and their sons and daughters. I have spent a lot of time with them. Realized their happiness and sorrows and shared my own words. I played with the kids there and educated them. In fact, I learned from them when I taught them. Much of my life has been spent in this debt. All these places have inspired me to make paintings. I have painted the Santal boys and girls in this series. There is a vivid feeling in their playfulness that has always fascinated me. And that is what I have tried to highlight.
Lately, I did some works on transformation, where I have tried to understand and thereby portraying the internal change a person undergoes. And further tried to connect it with my life. It’s not just the environment that is changing, it’s how psychologically we too change with the environment; that has been portrayed through the paintings.
The rural environment has actually inspired me a lot. In Shantiniketan, the village people and the environment live in a harmony. I have witnessed an intimate relation of nature and mankind also deeply analyzed it. Hence the series is an outcome of all these experiences.
Chapter II
প্রিন্ট-মেকিং মিডিয়ামে বেশ কিছু কাজ আমি করেছিলাম,যখন আমি মাস্টার্স ফাইনাল ইয়ারের স্টুডেন্ট। এই কাজগুলো বেশিরভাগ স্টুডিও বেসড। স্কুলিং শেষ করার সময় হয়ত স্টুডিওর সাথে একটু বেশিই অ্যাটাচমেন্ট তৈরি হয়ে গেছিল। বেশিরভাগ সময়টা স্টুডিওতেই কাটিয়ে দিতাম। আমার কাজের মধ্যেও এর প্রভাব পরেছিল। এই স্টুডিওর মধ্যে স্টুডেন্টদের আনা-গোনা সবসময়, যেন একটা কোম্ফর্ট জোন। এইমাত্র কাউকে দেখলাম, আবার এক ঘণ্টা পরে সেই একই জায়গায় অন্য কেউ এসে কাজ করছে, যেন এনার্জির আদান প্রদান হচ্ছে এই জায়গায়। এই মার্জিং (merging) ব্যাপারটা আমার কাজের মধ্যে ধীরেধীরে চলে আসছিল। আর আমি ওই জিনিসটাই আমার ছবির মধ্যেই তুলে ধরতে চাইছিলাম।
প্লেসের ক্ষেত্রেও এই জিনিসটা আমার সাথে ঘটেছে, অনেকগুলো প্লেসকে একসাথে কিভাবে একটা কম্পোজিশনে আনা যায় সেটাও আমার মধ্যে কাজ করেছে সবসময়। স্টুডিওর সারাংশকে আমি তুলে ধরার চেষ্টা করেছি আমার কাজের মধ্যে দিয়ে। একটা স্টুডেন্টের কাছে বিশেষ করে ফাইন-আর্টসের স্টুডেন্টের কাছে স্টুডিও ভীষণ ইম্পরট্যান্ট রোল প্লে করে। সেই জিনিসটাই আমার মধ্যে চলে আসে, কিভাবে থাকব এই স্টুডিও ছাড়া! এরপর জীবনটা কি হবে! মনের মধ্যে যেন একটা দোলাচল কাজ করছে। আর এই থেকেই আমার স্টুডিওর উপর একটা অ্যাটাচমেন্ট তৈরি হয়েছিল। এখনও আছে। ওখানেই একটা গল্প তৈরি করা। কিছু পরিচিত ক্যারেক্টার যেমন বন্ধু-বান্ধব, সিনিয়র বা জুনিয়ার ভাই-বোন এদের ক্যারেক্টার প্লে করে নানারকম আইডিয়া নিয়ে কাজ করা।
এখনতো টেকনলজির যুগ। মোবাইল, নেট ছাড়া একদিনও চলে না। এই জিনিসগুলো আমাকে খুব ভাবিয়েছে। what is called mobility? এই চলমান জগতে স্টুডিওর মধ্যে বলুন বা বাইরে, গোটা বিশ্বটা যেন মোবাইলের মধ্যে চলে এসেছে, একটা মোবাইলের সাথে মানুষের যতটা অ্যাটাচমেন্ট ততটা কিন্তু নিজের কাজের সাথেও নেই। এইসব জিনিসগুলো আমি স্টুডিওর মধ্যে থেকেই দেখতে পেতাম। সেগুলো আমাকে যেমন ভাবাতও তেমন ইন্টারেস্টিংও মনে হয়েছিল। আমার কাজের মধ্যেও এই জিনিসগুলো চলে এসেছে। এই সব কিছু মিলিয়েই আমার এই স্টুডিওর কাজ।

I was working with the print medium for quite some time, during my master’s final year. Most of them are studio-based works. While completing my schooling I, somehow became attached to the studio and used to spend most of my time inside that space. These also affected my works as well. The studio always welcomes many art students and becomes a comfort zone for many. I see someone working there and just after an hour someone else replaced that place, Studio is more like a space where energy is continuously transferring from one to another. This sense of merging was coming to my works as well. I was trying to portray these senses through my work.
Place or space played an important role in my works. I always tried to compose the sense of many places into my work. In this work, I tried to bring the essence of the studio inside my work. Studio plays an important role for final year students that also worked on me as well. I wondered, how would I live without the studio? What would I do? My mind was in complete turbulence and that prompted my attachment towards the studio. Studio presents a completely different experience for those who regularly work there. Working on different ideas with many characters like friends, juniors helps us to live every day.
This is the age of technology. We can’t think a moment without the internet or mobile. This also pushed me to think, What is Mobility? In this motile life whole world came inside the mobile whether it is a studio or the outside world. People became more attached to their phones rather than their works. I observed this even in the studio. It concerned me and also came to my works as well. My work is a collection of all those emotions.
Bangladesh
Ritusree Das, born in Bangladesh had done her schooling and M.F.A from Kala-Bhavana, Visva Bharati, Santiniketan. She used to visit Pearson pally, Santal village in Santiniketan from a very early age so her artwork is inspired by nature in a major way. She loves the connection between human and nature and tries to capture their bond, life and journey in her artwork.
